About

Bil Fulton studied architecture at the Robert Matthew School, Edinburgh University, after which he embarked on a career as an illustrator. Within a year or two he was awarded a fellowship by the Society of Architectural Illustration (SAI).

Clients include Ian G Lindsay & Partners, Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners (RMJM), Unwin Jones Partnership (UJP) Carlisle, Historic Scotland, Michael Laird Partnership, Royal College of Surgeons, and many more. Numerous commissions from these companies have spanned most of his career, with drawings of developments in the UK from Cornwall to Shetland, London, Europe, and the Middle East.

Artistic experience together with an excellent grasp of maths and physics, has proved invaluable for the perspective and photographic geometry involved, and later for computer graphics and design. Meanwhile Bil's architectural training has given him a keen sense of the detailing and construction of buildings that appear in his perspectives.

To date, the total output of finished hand-drawn perspectives is estimated at around 2,100. This is over and above any digital renderings, architects' working drawings and other miscellaneous work.

Over the last few years the drawing requirement for office and industrial projects has all but vanished, leaving educational, leisure, and residential developments. On occasions, however, there would be commissions for other projects ranging from aircraft and luxury yacht interiors, to book covers, and various diagrammatic illustrations.

In his publication Bil Fulton - Architectural Illustrator, Bil goes on to say:

“Throughout my working life, it has been immensely satisfying to produce these drawings, many of which have been vital for the successful outcome of various planning applications. One or two clients have said that not one of my perspectives has failed in its purpose.  What superb feedback, and praise indeed!”

“Although I also produce digital models, my finished output still remains for the most part hand drawn.”

“Commissions for computer generated images are usually either for house types or for large projects, and, provided that the client is able to differentiate between the good, the bad, and the ugly, my work is well received. For a large part of my time, though, my expertise in this area is used on private projects.”

“It suits me well though, that one or two clients still opt for the more personal touch and ask for traditional perspective drawings. It is thanks to them that the 'hand-drawn artist's impression' lives on and remains a valuable product that keeps illustrators like me in practice.”
